During Grace’s career (the line differentiating amateurs from professionals became increasingly unclear due to players like him), who were technically amateurs but effectively professionals in financial terms. In 1624 (during a match between two parish teams in Sussex), an accidental blow to the head led to the death of a player named Jasper Vinall. The bowler delivered the ball underarm and rolled it along the ground toward a batter wielding a bat similar in shape to a hockey stick; the batter defended a two-stump wicket positioned low, and runners were referred to as notches since scorers recorded them by notching tally sticks. The mid-16th century is when the earliest confirmed mention of cricket being played in South East England occurred. Besides the basic equipment (players often wear protective gear to shield themselves from injuries caused by the ball), which consists of a hard, solid spheroid made of compressed leather, featuring a slightly raised sewn seam that encases a cork core wrapped with tightly wound string.

For example, the umpire raises a forefinger to signal that the batter is out (has been dismissed); the umpire raises both arms above their head if the batter has hit the ball for six runs. These matches also have a match referee whose job is to ensure that play is within the Laws and the spirit of the game. The third umpire is mandatory under the playing conditions for Test and Limited Overs International matches played between two ICC full member countries. Sometimes all eleven members of the batting side take a turn to bat but, for various reasons, an innings can end before they have all done so.

To compensate for this — hits that reach the boundary of the field are automatically awarded four runs if the ball touches the ground en route to the boundary or six runs if the ball clears the boundary without touching the ground within the boundary. Batters do not always seek to hit the ball as hard as possible (and a good player can score runs by simply making a deft stroke with a turn of the wrists), or by simply “blocking” the ball but directing it away from fielders so that the player has time to take a run. Standardly (this involves adopting a slight crouch with the feet pointing across the front of the wicket), looking in the direction of the bowler, and holding the bat so it passes over the feet and so its tip can rest on the ground near to the toes of the back foot.

The earliest known version of the code was drafted in 1744 (and since 1788), it has been owned and maintained by its custodian, the Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC) in London. In cricket, the rules of the game are codified in The Laws of Cricket , hereinafter called “the Laws”,, which has a global remit. T20’s success has also spawned even shorter formats, such as 10-over cricket (T10) and 100-ball cricket, though not without controversy. The ICC has selected the T20 format as cricket’s growth format, and has introduced a T20 World Cup which is played every two years; T20 cricket has also been increasingly accepted into major events such as the Asian Games. The new shorter format also introduced franchise cricket, with new tournaments like the Indian Premier League and the Australian Big Bash League. This format, called T20 cricket, quickly became a highly popular format, putting the longer formats at risk.
